Regeni Murder, Consultant Appointed for the Defense. Possible Verdict in Summer. 'We Are Confident'

A possible verdict regarding the four Egyptian intelligence officers accused of abducting and murdering Italian researcher Giulio Regeni is anticipated this summer, with the trial resuming after a suspension.

The trial concerning the four Egyptian intelligence agents accused of the abduction and murder of Giulio Regeni, an Italian researcher, has resumed after being suspended last October. Regeni's body was discovered in Cairo on February 3, 2016, sparking international outrage and a lengthy investigation. Recently, a consultant has been appointed for the defense as the trial has now progressed to a pivotal stage where deliberations are expected soon.

An important date set for the proceedings is June 8, when a dialogue between the opposing parties will take place, followed by the prosecutor's requisition by Sergio Colaiocco on June 23 and 24 in the Bunker courtroom at Rebibbia. Although the prosecutor will present his requests for a verdict during these sessions, there is a possibility the final decision could be delayed until September, adding to the tension surrounding this already controversial case.

Furthermore, defense lawyer Alessandra Ballerini highlighted the difficulties in finding an expert consultant due to a pervasive atmosphere of fear among Egyptian citizens relating to the case. She indicated that attempts are underway to collaborate with a university in hopes of securing a suitable consultant, underscoring the challenges of navigating legal proceedings in a politically sensitive context involving human rights issues and international scrutiny.
