Government's Volcano Headquarters Evaluates 5 Volcanoes; No Immediate Eruption or Expansion Trends Observed

Japan's government volcano evaluation committee has assessed five volcanoes and found no immediate signs of eruption or expansion.

On the 24th, the Volcano Research Committee of Japan's government, which is part of the Volcano Headquarters, held discussions regarding the activity status of five volcanoes, including Kirishima (located in Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures). The committee determined that there are no observable trends indicating an immediate eruption or an increase in activity severity. The committee chose five volcanoes deemed necessitating urgent evaluation for their activity: Kirishima, Meakandake (in Hokkaido), Kusatsu-Shirane (in Gunma Prefecture), Miyakejima (in Tokyo), and Towada (straddling Aomori and Akita Prefectures). During the meeting, researchers with expertise in each volcano discussed current evaluations and necessary future research.

Following the meeting, Chairman Hiroshi Shimizu, an honorary professor at Kyushu University, stated in a press conference that while volcanic activity had been noted at Kirishima and Meakandake, there were no signs of escalation in their severity that would necessitate evacuation of local residents. Regarding Kusatsu-Shirane and Miyakejima, where crustal deformation has been observed, the committee acknowledged the potential for future eruptions but still asserted that there was no increase in immediate eruption risk. The committee emphasized the need for a better observational network in the Towada region due to currently limited data availability.
