Quito dismantles illegal garage and scrapyard for stolen cars

Authorities in Quito shut down an illegal garage and a scrapyard in operations that uncovered stolen vehicles and auto parts.

On the morning of Tuesday, February 24, two operations were carried out in central and southern Quito, leading to the dismantling of an illegal garage and a scrapyard in the La Libertad and Guamaní sectors, respectively. The National Police and the Metropolitan Control Agency (AMC) reported that three vehicles, reported stolen, were found on these premises, where individuals were extracting parts to sell.

In La Libertad, authorities discovered that the garage was operating without municipal permits, housing several car models, two of which had active theft reports. It is suspected that these vehicles belonged to the Municipality of Santiago de Píllaro, as they bore stickers and identifications from that local government. In addition to the stolen cars, police seized cell phones, mirrors, watches, cameras, and other items from the illegal garage, indicating a broader operation than mere vehicle theft.

The crackdown on these illegal operations reflects ongoing efforts by local authorities to combat vehicle theft and organized crime in Quito. The arrest of a woman during the operation further emphasizes the law enforcement's commitment to action against such illicit activities. This incident raises concerns about the extent of vehicle theft in the area and underscores the need for more stringent enforcement of municipal regulations regarding garages and scrap dealers.
