Cutter Attack at Junior High School: Saitama Prefectural Board of Education to Investigate as Serious Bullying Incident

A junior high school student in Saitama was attacked with a cutter by a classmate, prompting an investigation into potential serious bullying by the local education board.

In June 2022, an incident took place at the Saitama Prefectural Ina Gakuen Junior High School, where a third-year male student was attacked by another male student with a cutter. The local education board has announced it will investigate the case as a serious bullying incident. The victim sustained a 6-7 centimeter long and approximately 1-centimeter deep cut on his right knee. The student who attacked has already been referred to the family court for his violent behavior.

According to the victim, the attack occurred during recess while he was conversing with the assailant through a window separating the classroom from the hallway. While attempting to playfully stop the assailant from pestering him, the altercation escalated when the assailant suddenly retrieved a cutter from his pencil case and struck the victim. After receiving first aid in the school health room, the injured student was taken to a hospital for stitches. Despite his injury, the student chose to tell his parents and school that he had fallen and hurt himself, fearing retaliation and hoping for a smoother continuation of his school life.

The victim's parents expressed their disappointment, wishing that the school had made the incident public at the time it happened. The school, being a prefectural institution, is now under scrutiny as the education board prepares to conduct a thorough investigation to understand the bullying dynamics involved in this case and to prevent future occurrences. It highlights the urgent need for schools to address bullying and ensure student safety effectively.
