Councilman sentenced to pay a fine for video in which he appears with a pig insulting Evandro Leitão
A Brazilian councilman has been fined for electoral slander after a video emerged of him insulting a political opponent while holding a pig.
The Electoral Regional Court of Ceará (TRE-CE) has confirmed the conviction of councilman Inspector Alberto (PL) for electoral slander, linked to a controversial video published during the 2024 electoral campaign. In the video, Alberto is seen lifting a pig by its ears while directing insults at Evandro Leitão, the then mayoral candidate for Fortaleza. This public display, characterized by disparaging language, has raised questions about the standards of political conduct during elections.
As a result of his actions, Inspector Alberto is required to pay a fine amounting to approximately R$ 19,000, equivalent to 40 days' worth of fines calculated at one-third of the minimum wage at the time, adjusted for inflation. Previously sentenced in the first instance by the 95th Electoral Zone Court of Fortaleza, Alberto's appeal was ultimately rejected by the TRE-CE, reinforcing the consequences of his behavior in the public sphere.
The case highlights the ongoing challenges regarding political decorum and animal rights in Brazil. Alberto's actions have not only sparked discussions about the treatment of animals in political propaganda but have also raised concerns about the rhetoric used by politicians against their opponents. As Brazil approaches crucial electoral periods, such instances may reflect larger patterns of public discourse and ethics in politics.
