Lebanon Orders Response to Israeli Fire and Fears Targeting of Infrastructure Due to Iran

Lebanon has ordered its troops to respond to Israeli gunfire near the border and expressed concerns about potential threats to its infrastructure linked to Iranian influence.

In response to Israeli gunfire aimed at a Lebanese Army observation post in the southern border region of Marjeyoun, the Lebanese military has issued orders for soldiers to fortify their positions and retaliate. This incident coincided with an Israeli drone issuing warnings to Lebanese forces to withdraw from the area. The Lebanese Army's statement highlighted their commitment to monitoring the situation in coordination with both the ceasefire oversight committee and UNIFIL peacekeeping forces operating in the region.

Adding to the tensions, the Israeli military conducted operations late on Tuesday that involved the demolition of two houses in villages located within southern Lebanon. These acts are seen as violations of a ceasefire agreement established since late 2024. Reports from the Lebanese National News Agency indicate that Israeli forces have been actively employing explosives to destroy structures in towns such as Hula and Aita Shaab, exacerbating already strained relations between the two nations.

Lebanon's Foreign Minister, Yusuf Raji, reiterated the country's plea for support from "friendly and active nations" to urge restraint on Israel, reflecting Lebanon's ongoing challenges regarding its national security and the consistent threats posed by neighboring Israel. The government’s stance is particularly influenced by fears of Iranian involvement, which complicates the already fragile stability in the region as Lebanon grapples with the ramifications of international influence and local confrontations.
