Sudan: UN Body Finds 'Hallmarks of Genocide' in Darfur

A UN report indicates that the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan's Darfur region have committed acts that amount to genocide and other war crimes during their takeover of El Fasher.

The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan has released a harrowing report detailing the atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during their takeover of El Fasher, North Darfur, in late October 2025. The mission asserts that the RSF's actions constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, with specific conduct showing indications that genocide may be occurring. With ongoing violence and a lack of accountability measures, the report emphasizes the urgent need for international action to protect civilians and prevent further genocidal acts.

The report highlights the calculated siege lasting 18 months on El Fasher which left its residents in dire circumstances, preceding a three-day period where RSF forces unleashed violent attacks on the city. Testimonies collected by the mission reveal extensive human rights violations, including killings, forced disappearances, and sexual violence against thousands of individuals, primarily targeting specific identities within the population. The pattern of violence was systematic and intended to instill fear and control over the local communities.

Furthermore, the recommendations from the UN mission call for immediate and comprehensive measures to address the crisis in Darfur. This includes advancing accountability for the perpetrators of these atrocities and ensuring the protection of civilian populations. Without decisive interventions, the report warns, the risk of further genocidal violence remains serious, calling the international community to action in order to halt ongoing atrocities in Sudan’s conflict-affected regions.
