Saronicos Project: The Saronic resembles the Maldives

The Saronicos Project aims to decipher the Saronic Gulf's underwater environment, highlighting its resemblance to the Maldives and focusing on scientific research for its protection and restoration.

The Saronicos Project is an initiative aimed at exploring and documenting the underwater terrain of the Saronic Gulf, which shares characteristics with the Maldives over an area of approximately 400 square kilometers. This endeavor aims to gather essential scientific data that will enhance the protection and restoration efforts of the Gulf. The project combines the efforts of various research and operational teams to better understand the unique ecological features of the area.

In early February, a ten-day mission was launched from the Methana area, marking a significant collaboration between the 'Typhon' vessel, operated by the Athanasios K. Laskaridis Public Benefit Foundation, and the Oceanus Lab of the University of Patras, alongside the research vessel A/N 'Aegean' of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (ELKETHE). This joint operation signifies an important step towards integrating scientific inquiry with practical conservation efforts in the Saronic Gulf, reflecting a commitment to addressing environmental challenges with thorough research.

Fully funded by the Athanasios K. Laskaridis Public Benefit Foundation, the Saronicos Project is set to provide the first comprehensive and scientifically substantiated assessment of the Saronic Gulf's condition. The outcomes of this project are expected to translate into actionable policy recommendations aimed at safeguarding and rejuvenating this vital marine ecosystem, thus illustrating a proactive approach to marine conservation in Greece.
