EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kallas: To Promote Peace in Ukraine, the US Must Increase Pressure on Russia
EU's foreign affairs chief emphasizes the need for the US to shift its focus from Ukraine to increasing pressure on Russia for a peace agreement.
Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, has called for a reevaluation of the United States' approach to the Ukraine conflict, suggesting that pressure should be placed on Russia, rather than on Ukraine, which has not yielded significant results in over a year. Kallas indicated that the current strategy has been less effective and urged that now may be the time to concentrate efforts on the aggressor side in hopes of achieving progress towards peace.
According to reports from Bloomberg, the US is keen to see a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine before the celebrations for the 250th Independence Day of the United States on July 4, which President Donald Trump will be hosting. However, European officials and NATO representatives have expressed skepticism, noting that there are no signs indicating that Russian President Vladimir Putin is willing to enter into an agreement without meeting his substantial demands. The inability of US-backed peace talks to meet several deadlines has led some officials to concede there are no indicators of Putin moving away from his maximalist positions.
The discussions for potential peace in Ukraine saw renewed interest following Donald Trump’s assumption of the presidency in January 2025. Trump has openly discussed the urgency of these talks and the importance of reaching a stable resolution to the conflict. However, the ongoing complexities of the situation imply that any negotiations require significant shifts in both sides' stances, particularly from Russia, which remains adamantly firm on its demands, complicating the prospects for peace negotiations now and in the future.
