The USA Must Increase Pressure on Russia, Otherwise There Will Be No Peace in Ukraine, Says Pavel
Czech President Petr Pavel urges the United States to increase political pressure on Russia to secure peace in Ukraine, as Russia is currently not mentally prepared for negotiations.
Czech President Petr Pavel, speaking at a Ukrainian lunch organized by the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation during the Munich Security Conference, emphasized that the United States must increase its political pressure on Russia to force it to the negotiating table in order to achieve peace in Ukraine. He asserted that if the focus of pressure shifts to Ukraine instead, it will not lead to any progress in negotiations. Pavel remarked that Russia must understand that the only viable path forward is to engage in dialogue, although he expressed doubts that Russia is ready for such a mindset at this moment.
Pavel recalled his previous remarks made at the Munich conference a year ago, where he cautioned against excessive optimism regarding a quick resolution to the war in Ukraine. He aimed to temper expectations to prevent disappointment and frustration among international observers. In his speech, he underscored that the military situation remains unfavorable for Russia, further accentuating the need for a strategic shift in international diplomatic efforts towards a resolution.
The Czech president’s comments reflect a growing concern among European leaders regarding the war's protraction and its impacts on regional stability. Pavel's call for greater U.S. involvement highlights the need for a united front against Russian aggression, as he seeks to reinforce the position that only with stronger pressure can there be hope for meaningful progress in ending the conflict and paving the way for peace negotiations.
