The Ministry of Welfare announces that it does not see the possibility of developing a violence eradication legislative proposal by March
The Latvian Ministry of Welfare has indicated it will not be able to develop a comprehensive violence prevention and eradication legislative proposal by March, noting ongoing legislative tasks already in progress.
The Latvian Ministry of Welfare (LM) has stated that it does not foresee the ability to draft a comprehensive legislative proposal aimed at violence prevention and eradication by the set deadline of March 1. This announcement comes after the Saeima tasked the government on October 16 to create such a proposal, in response to escalating concerns about violence against women and domestic violence. The legislative initiative was intended to serve as an alternative to the Istanbul Convention, which the majority of the parliament, including the coalition party Unity and the Green and Farmers' Union (ZZS), voted to withdraw from last year. Following the law's second review, the Saeima decided to defer its evaluation to the next parliamentary session.
