LHF president: The result is satisfactory, but there was a unique opportunity to step up higher

The Latvian men's hockey team's performance at the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo has been deemed satisfactory, according to the president of the Latvian Hockey Federation, Aigars Kalvītis.

Aigars Kalvītis, the president of the Latvian Hockey Federation (LHF), expressed that the performance of the Latvian men's national ice hockey team at the Olympic Games was satisfactory despite some missed opportunities. The team finished in 10th place after a series of challenging matches, which included a notable defeat against the eventual champions from the USA. Kalvītis pointed out that the Latvian team managed to field nearly their strongest lineup, with only a couple of players sidelined due to injuries, which highlights the team's potential despite their final standing.

In the group stage, Latvia faced tough competition, managing to defeat Germany but losing to both the USA and Denmark. The president remarked on the high tension present in each of their matches, which was anticipated but led to disappointment when the team could not qualify for the quarterfinals. The loss against Denmark was particularly frustrating as it derailed their hopes of advancing further in the tournament, which Kalvītis described as a missed opportunity for the team to capitalize on their strengths and capabilities.

Kalvītis defended the team’s effort, noting that reaching the Olympics was already a significant achievement for Latvia. He acknowledged that competing against the world's best hockey players is a great honor, even though the team fell short of their goal to advance into the quarterfinals. This experience may serve to galvanize the team for future competitions, where they will aim to build on this Olympic experience to achieve greater success in international hockey.
