His story is not unique, as many refugees struggle with the same feelings of loss and longing for the life they once knew. Svitlana Isadchenko, a 69-year-old woman, also recounts her trauma, describing how an attack on her home in Odessa resulted in the total destruction of her possessions and memories. Her visit to Sweden is to renew her residence permit, a stark reminder of her new reality where she must navigate life without the familiar comforts of her past. Despite her efforts to adjust, the lack of language skills, compounded by the psychological scars of war, make integrating into Swedish society a significant challenge. Since the onset of the war on February 24, 2022, Sweden has seen a significant influx of Ukrainian refugees, with around 82,000 asylum applications received. Currently, over 45,000 individuals have been granted valid residence permits, highlighting Sweden’s response to the humanitarian crisis and the ongoing need for support as these refugees rebuild their lives amid the ongoing turmoil in Ukraine.
