Fachin invites presidents of Congress, Gilmar and Dino to discuss suspended 'add-ons'

The President of Brazil's Supreme Court has invited key political figures to discuss the suspension of additional payments to public servants that exceed legal salary limits.

Edson Fachin, the President of Brazil’s Supreme Court (STF), has called a meeting with the leaders of the National Congress, Senate President Davi Alcolumbre and Chamber of Deputies President Hugo Motta, along with Ministers Gilmar Mendes and Flávio Dino. This meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, aims to address the issue of additional payments known colloquially as 'penduricalhos'. These payments usually refer to compensation, bonuses, and allowances that add up to public servant salaries but are in question due to their legality and alignment with the established salary cap of R$ 46,366.19.

At the beginning of the month, Minister Dino issued a directive giving the three branches of the government a 60-day deadline to review these payments. The directive focuses on cutting any payments that lack legal justification or established legal frameworks. This move has significant implications for public spending and the fiscal responsibility of the government.

The discussion will likely highlight ongoing concerns regarding the transparency and legal standing of additional compensation for public servants, reflecting wider issues of government spending and accountability in Brazil. The outcome of this meeting could either reform how public sector remuneration is managed or continue the status quo, affecting the nation's budget and public trust in government operations.
