On March 1, Lithuanians in Colorado commemorated the Užgavėnės festival, continuing a cherished tradition that started with the founding of their Lithuanian school. This year marks the eighth anniversary of the celebration, which has transformed from a small weekend gathering into a vibrant hub of Lithuanian culture that unites individuals from different generations and experiences. Despite the absence of snow, about fifty participants enjoyed the cheerful atmosphere, successfully pushing winter away without much effort.

The celebration kicked off with the annual duel between two symbolic characters, Kanapinis and Lašininis. Their contest rekindles childhood tales and symbolizes the age-old struggle between abundance and fasting, heaviness and lightness, winter and spring. Participants were treated to a theatrical presentation that illustrated the significance of these costumes, showcasing the rich storytelling traditions embedded within the festival.

Children quickly took over the courtyard with their excitement for traditional games, including sack races. This not only added an element of fun but also strengthened community bonds, as families gathered to witness the joyous activities. The event serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural heritage and community spirit among Lithuanians living abroad, reiterating how traditions adapt yet endure even in faraway lands.
