Missile Unit of the Ground Self-Defense Forces to Be Deployed to Yonaguni Island by FY2030, Says Defense Minister Koizumi

Japan plans to deploy a missile unit to Yonaguni Island by fiscal year 2030 as part of its efforts to enhance national defense.

Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced that the Ground Self-Defense Forces will deploy a missile unit equipped with the 'Type 03 Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile' to the Yonaguni garrison in Okinawa Prefecture by the fiscal year 2030. This move is aimed at countering potential threats from enemy aircraft and cruise missiles. However, Koizumi noted that the exact timing for the deployment may change depending on the progress of facility development, although plans are currently set for 2030.

The establishment of this missile unit reflects Japan's ongoing defense strategy known as the 'Southwest Shift', which aims to bolster the military presence on the southwestern islands, especially given the tensions surrounding Taiwan. Yonaguni Island is the westernmost point of Japan and is located approximately 111 kilometers from Taiwan, underscoring its strategic importance in the region. The Ministry of Defense had already indicated intentions to deploy air defense missile units to Yonaguni in the future.

In preparation for this deployment, a resident briefing is scheduled to occur in Yonaguni on March 2, where Koizumi has promised to thoroughly and respectfully explain the plans to local residents. This reflects the government's commitment to transparency and community engagement as it seeks to enhance national security in response to evolving regional threats.
