Japan to deploy missiles near Taiwan by 2031

Japan plans to deploy air defense missiles on the remote Yonaguni Island near Taiwan by March 2031, as stated by Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi.

Japan has announced a significant military development by planning to deploy air defense missiles on Yonaguni Island, which is in proximity to Taiwan. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi confirmed this strategy on Wednesday, marking the first instance where Japan has set a timeline for the missile deployment, which had initially been announced in 2022. Yonaguni, located approximately 110 kilometers from Taiwan, becomes a strategic site as tensions in the region escalate.

The deployment of missiles comes amidst growing tensions between China and Japan, particularly since November when Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the potential threat posed by China toward democratically governed Taiwan. Takaichi highlighted that any Chinese aggression against Taiwan could provoke a military response from Japan, emphasizing Japan's commitment to regional security. This reflects Japan's broader defense strategy amid perceived threats in the Asia-Pacific region.

As Taiwan is considered by China to be part of its territory, and the Chinese government has not ruled out the use of force to reclaim it, Japan's missile deployment is likely to further exacerbate tensions in the area. This military buildup signals Japan's proactive stance on national defense and security collaboration with allied nations, particularly in light of China's assertive claims in the region.
