ADMHE: Relief of €3.7 billion for consumers until 2034 from electrical interconnections

The ADMHE estimates that consumers will benefit from a relief of €3.7 billion from electrical interconnections until 2034.

The ADMHE (Independent Power Transmission Operator) has predicted that Greek consumers will experience a substantial relief of €3.7 billion between 2026 and 2034 due to the electrical interconnections of non-interconnected islands with the mainland. This relief is primarily made possible through the full interconnection of the Cyclades and the dual interconnection of Crete with Attica and the Peloponnese. It is estimated that during the period from 2026 to 2030, the average annual savings from Public Utility Charges (PUC) will amount to €550 million each year.

In addition to the initial interconnections, further integration of the Dodecanese islands and the Northern Aegean islands into the mainland electric grid is projected to start in 2031. This addition is expected to nearly double the annual savings from Public Utility Charges, bringing it to around €1 billion per year. Consequently, the overall net economic benefit for consumers stemming from the construction and functioning of these new electrical interconnections will be significant, with an average annual consumer relief estimated at €416 million.

The findings by ADMHE underscore the importance of enhancing the electric infrastructure in Greece, particularly for islands which have struggled with higher energy costs due to their isolation from the mainland grid. As these interconnections come to fruition, consumers can look forward to more affordable energy solutions, which could also promote economic growth in these regions.
