Fagersta Finnish Association Grows – While Others Lose Members

The Fagersta Finnish Association is experiencing growth in membership while other Finnish associations in Sweden report declines due to aging populations and a lack of engagement from younger members.

The Fagersta Finnish Association stands out as a unique success story amid a trend of declining membership within Finnish associations across Sweden. While many associations have struggled since the pandemic, leading to empty meeting places and disappearing members, Fagersta has managed to increase its membership numbers significantly. According to Riitta Vallius, secretary of the Västmanlands district of the Swedish Finnish National Federation, this trend is seen nationwide, where older members age out and younger generations often lack the time or inclination to participate in community activities.

In response to these challenges, the Fagersta association has actively focused on creating more engaging activities for its members. During the recent Olympics, members gathered to watch Finland's hockey matches together, fostering a sense of community and involvement. Currently, the association hosts multiple meetings each week, allowing members to socialize over coffee or meals, which has been key to maintaining and nurturing a sense of belonging among members. As explained by Paavo Kotoneva, the chairman, it is crucial to cultivate a spirit of togetherness within the association to ensure its sustainability.

The popular Thursday lunches are one of the many activities that have proven effective in attracting attendees and keeping the spirit of the association alive. These gatherings not only provide an opportunity for members to meet but also serve as a social cornerstone for the Finnish community in Fagersta, showcasing how community initiatives can thrive despite broader trends of decline in membership across similar organizations in Sweden.
