Nida has become the ice yacht capital: the Baltic countries 'Ice-Blokart' championship took place here
Nida hosted the Baltic countries 'Ice-Blokart' championship with 35 sailors from six countries competing despite challenging snowy conditions.
Nida recently earned the title of the ice yacht capital after hosting the Baltic countries 'Ice-Blokart' championship, which brought together 35 sailors from six different countries: Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, France, and South Africa. This event highlighted the town's long-standing tradition in ice sailing, dating back nearly a century to the founding of the Curonian Ice Yacht Club, which was the third of its kind in Europe when established. The championship reaffirmed that the ice sailing traditions in Nida remain vibrant and significant.
However, the event faced challenges due to heavy snowfall in the weeks leading up to the competition, which covered the ice on the region's water bodies in a thick layer of snow, raising concerns about the possibility of canceling the championship. In a remarkable attempt to salvage the event, organizers worked to create a special course for the ice yachts, benefiting from a record thickness of ice on the Curonian Lagoon, which measured up to 70 cm in some places. The support from the Neringa municipality also played a crucial role in enabling the competition to proceed as planned.
This innovative solution of constructing a dedicated ice yacht course in such adverse weather conditions is a rare occurrence in the sport, showcasing the commitment of the organizers and participants to maintaining the ice sailing tradition in Nida. It not only ensured the successful execution of the championship but also highlighted the unique challenges and adaptability required in winter sports, contributing to the international recognition of Nida as an ice yacht destination.
