LSDP leader: if the customs directorate competition was legitimate, the minister must appoint its winner

The leader of the LSDP asserts that the customs director position should be filled according to legal procedures if the competition is deemed legitimate.

M.Sinkevičius, the leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), emphasized that any state service competition must strictly adhere to legal regulations without any improvisation. He criticized the notion that decisions about the competition could be casually made by a minister, insisting that there are established laws and a commission that oversees such processes. He expressed confidence that the custom's competition was conducted lawfully and that the eventual appointment should reflect this legality.

Sinkevičius also commented on the recent dismissal of the Finance Ministry's Chancellor, Mindaugas Šima, distancing that decision from the customs director competition. He suggested that the finance minister's desire to appoint new personnel was a standard procedure and should not be interpreted as related to any specific competition or operational issues. The social democrat emphasized that ministers have the right to alter their political staff as needed, which aligns with their strategic leadership goals.

The comments reflect ongoing discourse in Lithuanian politics regarding transparency and adherence to regulations in public office appointments. This issue underscores the importance of proper bureaucratic processes as well as the scrutiny of political changes within government departments, particularly in light of ongoing discussions about governance and accountability within state institutions.
