LSDP leader hopes that the working group's efforts regarding LRT will not go to waste

The leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party is optimistic that a parliamentary working group's recommendations regarding the national broadcaster will lead to meaningful changes and not be ignored.

In a recent interview, M. Sinkevičius, the leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), expressed hopes that the ongoing efforts of a parliamentary working group focused on the Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) would yield positive outcomes rather than be disregarded. He mentioned that the group has been receptive to feedback from various stakeholders, especially after the protests that took place at the end of the previous year, indicating a willingness to engage in discussions about necessary reforms.

The upcoming spring session of the Seimas, Lithuania's parliament, will be crucial in determining whether these proposed changes can progress. Sinkevičius highlighted that the working group's findings may reveal whether the delays and obstructions in the legislative process stem from unwillingness to engage in dialogue or were a result of differing political positions among legislators. According to him, the group's draft proposal is set to be registered with the parliament's legal framework soon, and it includes critical changes such as defining the national broadcaster's mission and establishing a new governance body for it.

This proposed legislation is essential for enhancing the functioning of the LRT, especially since the current legal framework lacks a clear definition of its mission. The working group aims to increase the board of the LRT from 12 to 15 members, signaling a move towards greater transparency and accountability in how the national broadcaster operates. If these reforms are embraced, they could significantly impact Lithuania's media landscape by promoting a more robust and defined role for the national broadcaster in serving public interests.
