The Seimas working group supports the proposal to create an LRT board
The Lithuanian Seimas working group has endorsed a proposal to establish a board for the public broadcaster LRT, aiming to enhance its independence and accountability.
During a recent meeting, Juozas Olekas, the head of the working group and Speaker of the Seimas, announced support for the creation of a governing board for the public broadcaster LRT. This proposal was initially introduced by ArtΕ«ras Zuokas at a meeting in late January, where he emphasized the need to reduce the number of board members appointed by the president and limit the terms of the broadcaster's leadership. Zuokas argued that these changes are necessary to strengthen the independence, transparency, and accountability of LRT.
The working group of the Seimas continues to deliberate a comprehensive package of legislative amendments concerning LRT governance. A draft document of nearly 160 pages has been compiled, encompassing suggestions from parliamentarians, media organizations, and other stakeholders. This draft will undergo review and consideration by the working group to ensure that various interests are represented and adequately addressed in the proposed reforms.
The last meeting of the working group took place the previous Thursday, where they discussed several key aspects of the proposed amendments. The ongoing evaluation of these suggestions highlights the Lithuanian parliament's commitment to reforming the governance structure of LRT to better serve the interests of the public and enhance the broadcaster's operational integrity.
