The shape of ears causes painful problems for rabbits

Rabbits with floppy ears are at a higher risk for hidden and painful ear issues, according to a new study.

A recent study led by the Royal Veterinary College has found that rabbits with floppy ears are significantly more likely to face a variety of painful ear problems. Out of eleven identified issues, those with droopy ears were more susceptible to nine of them, including narrow ear canals, eczema, discharges, and other abnormalities that could indicate painful inflammation or infection. The research emphasizes the role that ear shape plays in the health of these rabbits, shedding light on potential care needs for pet owners.

In addition to ear shape, the study indicated that factors like head shape and weight may also influence the likelihood of ear problems among rabbits. These insights provide a vital context for veterinarians and pet owners alike, improving their understanding of how different physical traits can affect animal health. The research aims to raise awareness about the specific challenges faced by different breeds of rabbits, particularly highlighting the responsibilities of pet owners in monitoring their pets’ health.

Maria Jackson, the lead author of the study, urges rabbit owners, especially those with floppy-eared breeds, to be vigilant for signs of ear pain. Symptoms such as excessive scratching at the ears or abnormal head shaking could be indicative of underlying issues that require veterinary attention. This proactive approach can help mitigate the suffering of affected rabbits, ensuring they lead healthier, more comfortable lives.
