National Council of Human Rights begins mission to investigate neo-Nazism in Goiás
The National Council of Human Rights in Brazil is initiating an on-site mission to investigate the rise of hate speech and neo-Nazi cells in the state of Goiás.
The National Council of Human Rights (CNDH) in Brazil has commenced an on-site investigation into the proliferation of hate speech, extremism, and neo-Nazi activities in Goiás. This mission, led by Special Rapporteur Carlos Nicodemos, aims to extend the council's territorial presence and establish a national response to combat these troubling issues. The team includes Ivana Leal, the president of CNDH and a native of Goiás, highlighting the mission's local relevance and urgency.
The mission commenced on Monday with a visit to the Axé Dan Fé Èrò community center in Goiânia, which serves as a platform for engaging with the community about the dangers of extremism. Following this visit, the team is set to hold meetings with public security officials at the Integrated Intelligence, Command, and Control Center, as well as discussions with representatives from education, culture, and human rights sectors at the State Education Secretariat. This engagement is crucial to understanding the local context and the multi-faceted approach needed to tackle extremism effectively.
On the second day of their mission, the CNDH team will continue their inquiries into the rise of extremist groups, aiming to gather insights that can inform comprehensive strategies to counteract hatred and promote tolerance within the community. The mission's outcome is expected to have significant implications for national policy and the protection of human rights in Brazil, particularly as it pertains to addressing and combating neo-Nazism and hate speech at multiple levels.
