Missing in Goiás: State registers more than 3,000 cases per year, says Ministry of Justice and Public Security

The number of disappearances in Goiás, Brazil, has been steadily increasing, with more than 3,000 cases reported annually according to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

The situation regarding missing persons in Goiás, Brazil, is alarming, with more than 3,000 cases recorded each year, as reported by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP). Over the last five years, a total of 17,400 individuals have been reported missing, indicating a significant rise of nearly 33% in cases from 2021 to 2025. This averages to approximately 10 people going missing daily, highlighting a growing concern that affects numerous families and raises questions about public safety in the region.

Despite the high number of cases, the efficiency of investigations remains a pressing issue, with only about half of the missing persons cases being resolved. Between 2021 and 2025, 9,200 cases were successfully concluded, leaving many families still in anguish over unresolved disappearances. The statistics show a gradually increasing trend not just in cases reported, but also in the number of people who remain unaccounted for, exacerbating the fears within the community about personal safety and security.

As of early 2026, 562 new cases have already been registered, which emphasizes the urgent need for improved measures and strategies by law enforcement and government agencies to address this unsettling trend. There are calls for better resources, training, and protocols to tackle the issue effectively, ensuring that more families receive closure as investigations yield results and lead to the safe return of their loved ones.
