Choirs in Vidzeme are considering organizing their own song festival dedicated to Raimonds Pauls
Choirs in the Vidzeme region of Latvia are planning to hold an alternative song festival on July 11 in honor of composer Raimonds Pauls, aiming to showcase their extensive preparations and dedication to choral music despite earlier setbacks.
Uldis Kokars, the chief conductor of choirs in the AlΕ«ksne, Balvi, and Gulbene districts, is actively working with the choir 'Harmonija' to arrange an alternative concert that aligns with their long-term efforts to perform a carefully curated repertoire. Due to the uncertainty caused by the ongoing pandemic and previous illness among members, there is a strong desire to allow singers to present their hard work rather than canceling everything altogether. Kokars emphasizes the importance of accommodating the performers who have invested months of effort and are eager to participate in a meaningful event.
The alternative concert is proposed to take place on the very same date as the originally scheduled song festival in RΔ«ga, July 11, demonstrating the choirs' resilience and commitment. Singers express excitement about returning to the stage after years away from large choral events, as one choir member shares her hope of rekindling the joy of collective singing and honoring the legacy of Maestro Raimonds Pauls. The planned concert aims not only to celebrate Pauls but also to respect the work put in by many participants who have come together to create a unified performance.
In addition to highlighting the musical talent within the region, this planned event presents an opportunity for the community to the celebrate their cultural heritage and solidarity through music. By mobilizing all 15 choirs in the district, they aspire to provide an engaging experience for audiences, reaffirming the vital role of choral traditions in Latvian culture while navigating the challenges posed by the pandemic.
