Chairman in Risskov is pleased about coastal protection: We cannot lift it alone

The chairman of the Vejlby Fed property owner's association expresses satisfaction about coastal protection funding for Risskov, emphasizing the need for shared financial responsibility.

Risskov, located near Aarhus, is highlighted as a top priority for receiving part of the almost 15 billion kroner allocated to safeguard Denmark's coastlines. The chairman of the Vejlby Fed property owner's association, Bendt Hjort, is particularly optimistic about this investment, indicating that local residents have already initiated their own efforts to build and maintain a dike against the encroaching sea.

During a recent press conference on coastal protection led by Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke, Hjort noted the mention of covering 85 percent of construction costs for various flood defense measures, including dikes, sluices, and raising ground levels along the stream. He pointed out that these efforts are significantly costly and emphasize the need for community and governmental collaboration to manage these expenses, implying that local efforts are insufficient to tackle the challenges presented by climate change and rising sea levels.

Hjort's sentiments reflect broader community concerns regarding environmental resilience as residents face the reality of climate adaptation. This funding can potentially alleviate some financial burdens for the community while fostering a more comprehensive approach to coastal management in Denmark, ultimately allowing Risskov and other vulnerable areas along the coast to implement the necessary protections against the threat of flooding and erosion.
