Dragør will not be part of the state 10,000-year coastal protection

The municipality of Dragør will not be included in the national coastal protection project intended to safeguard areas like Copenhagen Airport against severe weather for the next 10,000 years due to cost and complexity concerns.

The municipality of Dragør has been excluded from a significant coastal protection project aimed at shielding key infrastructures, including Copenhagen Airport, from severe weather events projected over the next 10,000 years. The Danish Transport Ministry has determined that the project is too costly and complex to be feasible. Instead, a new plan will focus on constructing a protective dike south of Copenhagen Airport, essentially segmenting Amager and leaving Dragør outside this protective measure.

Despite this exclusion, Dragør remains engaged in a cooperative effort among the capital's municipalities to develop local coastal protection strategies. Mayor Kenneth Gøtterup has expressed gratitude for the clarity provided to the municipality regarding its role in these broader protective efforts. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges that municipalities face in securing adequate protection against climate-related threats while navigating budgetary constraints.

The decision not to include Dragør in the long-term coastal protection plan raises questions about the implications for its residents and infrastructure in the face of rising sea levels and increased storm intensity. While Dragør will not receive direct benefits from the state project, the municipality's ongoing collaboration in local coastal management initiatives suggests an awareness of the critical need for sustainable solutions in West Copenhagen’s rapidly changing environmental context.
