Natura will pay US$ 67 million for lawsuit against Avon in the USA over contaminated product
Natura has agreed to pay US$ 67 million to settle a lawsuit involving Avon in the United States regarding allegations of asbestos contamination in talc products.
Natura announced on Monday, October 23, that it has opted to settle a lawsuit against Avon Products in the United States for a total of US$ 67 million. This agreement is part of a legal case concerning adverse findings related to claims of asbestos contamination in talcum products manufactured by Avon. The initial judgment against Avon had placed the updated financial liability at roughly US$ 68.8 million, highlighting the significant legal stakes involved.
The company stated that the financial impact of this settlement will manifest on March 6, and emphasized that this payment will primarily be offset by incoming funds from two transactions: the sale of Avon Card for US$ 22 million and the sale of Avon Russia for approximately €26.9 million. This strategic maneuver indicates that Natura is taking proactive steps to manage its financial obligations while also navigating potential risks associated with the legal landscape surrounding cosmetic product safety.
Natura clarified that entering into this agreement does not imply any admission of guilt or acknowledgment of wrongdoing by either the company or its subsidiaries. Instead, the decision was made in alignment with the company's best interests, considering the specific nuances of the legal situation. This case underscores the increasing scrutiny that companies face concerning product safety and consumer protection, particularly in industries dealing with consumer goods that have potential health implications.
