Arson at Skallberget – 20-year-old sentenced to prison after balcony fire in Västerås
A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for arson following a balcony fire in Västerås, which was determined to have been started with gasoline.
On June 25 of last year, a fire broke out on a balcony of a multi-family residential building in Skallberget, Västerås. The fire occurred while several people were present in the residence, but thankfully it was extinguished quickly, and no injuries were reported. Investigations by the National Forensic Center revealed that the fire was intentionally set using some form of gasoline.
Surveillance footage captured a young man on an electric scooter circling the area both before and after the incident, and police were able to track his movements from Eskilstuna central station to the apartment through his phone data. The evidence strongly indicated his involvement in the crime, leading to a conviction for arson as well as damage for breaking a window in the entrance of the building. The defendant denies the charges against him.
In addition to the prison sentence, the man has been ordered to pay damages to both the residents affected by the fire and the property owner. This case highlights issues regarding safety in residential areas and the serious consequences of reckless behavior, especially in incidents involving arson that could have endangered lives.
