Prison Sentences for Women Who Robbed an Elderly Couple
Two women received prison sentences for robbing an elderly couple, exploiting the victim's trust to gain access to their home.
On April 7, 2023, two women executed a carefully planned robbery of an elderly couple, taking advantage of the homeowner's trust. They engaged the woman in conversation and offered to sell her clothes, while one of them stealthily entered the house to steal 3,000 euros, which the couple had saved for firewood and home repairs. The court found their actions premeditated as they wore gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints and staged a fake trading situation to disarm the suspecting victim.
Despite one of the defendants, R.Bieliauskienė, attempting to take full responsibility for the crime during the trial, the court dismissed her defense as a tactic to mitigate her sentence. Evidence showed that the women acted in concert, which was substantiated by quick police response initiated by the son of the elderly couple. He had previously installed cameras following another burglary, and upon noticing strange individuals on the footage, he promptly alerted his parents and the authorities.
This case underscores the vulnerability of the elderly and the calculated nature of crimes targeting them. As a result of the trial, both women were sentenced to prison, reflecting the legal system's stance against such exploitation of seniors and illustrating the importance of vigilance among families with elderly members to prevent similar crimes in the future.
