Ipsos: The decline of PS has been confirmed, it's at the level of Smer. The opposition is not losing voters overall
Recent polling data indicates that the support for the opposition party Progresívne Slovensko has dropped to levels comparable to their main competitor, Smer.
In mid-February, a new Ipsos poll for Denník N revealed that the support for the opposition party Progresívne Slovensko (PS) has decreased significantly, now standing almost equal to that of Smer, with PS at 18.8% and Smer at 18.4%. This reflects a concerning trend for PS, as it has lost two percentage points since December, according to a recent Focus poll, and has dropped three points according to the NMS model over the same period, indicating their fall below the symbolic 20% threshold across various polling organizations.
The Ipsos model also highlighted other parties' standings, with Republika at nearly 12%, Hnutie Slovensko at 8.8%, SaS at 8.4%, and the governing Hlas party slightly above 7%. Additionally, two more opposition parties, the Demokrati and KDH, would also make it into parliament with support around six percent each. This dynamic sets a competitive stage ahead of upcoming elections, where shifts in voter support could dramatically impact the political landscape in Slovakia.
The decline of PS is alarming not only for its supporters but also for the opposition as a whole, as it indicates a potential consolidation of voter preferences that could benefit Smer and other parties amidst fluctuating electoral sentiments. The challenges faced by PS might encourage the opposition to reassess strategies and voter engagement tactics to regain momentum ahead of the elections, which will be crucial for shaping Slovakia’s political future.
