Suspected gang rape on the cruise ship under prosecution consideration - three men are suspected of the crime

Three men are being prosecuted for a gang rape allegedly committed on a cruise ship returning from Sweden to Finland last year.

A police investigation has concluded regarding the alleged gang rape that took place on the cruise ship Viking Grace last October, where three men are now facing charges. Originally, four men were arrested upon their return to Finland from Sweden, but one was later released from suspicion. The police's findings have led to serious allegations against the three remaining suspects who are believed to have committed the crime.

The allegations surfaced when Stockholm police were initially informed of the incident, which prompted their preliminary investigation. Given that the crime occurred in Finnish territorial waters, the case was transferred to the Southwest Finland Police Department for further inquiry. The lead investigator, Crime Commissioner Jutta Karrento, has indicated that detailed evidence was gathered during the investigation, including allegations of voyeurism against one of the suspects due to recordings taken during the events.

This case highlights the issue of sexual violence on cruise ships, which can complicate law enforcement due to jurisdictional challenges. The outcome of this investigation and the ensuing legal proceedings may shed light on how such incidents are handled in international waters and may prompt discussions around legal reform in maritime law, particularly concerning the protection of passengers from sexual crimes.
