Man in Alicante sentenced for throwing corrosive substance at dog that bothered him by barking
A man has been fined and banned from activities with animals for 16 months for throwing a corrosive substance at a dog that barked at him.
A man was sentenced in Alicante to a fine and a 16-month ban on having any activities with animals after he threw a corrosive substance at a dog because it was barking and bothering him while he passed by. The incident occurred between November 16 and 30, 2023, and the dog, named 'Han', suffered chemical burns and eye injuries that required veterinary attention. The specialized law firm Aboganimal represented the dog's owner, who has been awarded €2,500 for veterinary and moral damages stemming from the attack.
The perpetrator, identified as W.B.W., used a syringe-like instrument to shoot the corrosive liquid through the fence of a private home in the Altabista urbanization. The local authorities used surveillance cameras to identify him, leading to his conviction by the Villajoyosa court. This case highlights the ongoing issues regarding animal cruelty and the importance of legal measures that protect domestic animals from abusive individuals.
Such incidents raise awareness about the responsibilities pet owners have and the consequences of harming animals. The court's verdict not only imposes financial penalties but also serves as a deterrent to others who might consider similar actions. The recognition of animal rights continues to evolve in Spain, reflecting a broader societal shift toward greater empathy and legal protection for vulnerable creatures such as these.
