The São Paulo Court of Justice (TJ-SP) has sentenced a 30-year-old man for animal mistreatment after he was caught on video abusing his pet dog by throwing it into a barrel filled with water. The incident occurred in Praia Grande, a coastal city in São Paulo, and the man has received a sentence of two years and four months in semi-open prison, alongside a prohibition on owning animals. This sentencing comes after an anonymous complaint was made to the Ministério Público (Public Ministry) via the Instituto Luisa Mell, which prompted an investigation into the man's actions.

Initially, the Praia Grande justice system acquitted the man in February 2025 due to a lack of evidence, emphasizing that the only proof available was the video evidence presented in the case. However, the court later revisited the case, leading to a ruling from judge Antônio Carlos Martins of the 2nd Criminal Court of Praia Grande, which acknowledged the mistreatment and deemed the evidence sufficient.
