From father's advice to passion for the craft: fish farmer's daughter transforms tilapia skin into fashion items and bio-jewelry
Katia Mastroto has created a sustainable fashion line from tilapia skin in São Paulo, promoting both aesthetic value and social impact.
In São Paulo, a unique initiative led by Katia Mastroto, a resident of Presidente Prudente, is transforming tilapia skin into innovative fashion items, including shoes, bags, and bio-jewelry. This venture not only showcases the beauty of the material but also addresses environmental and social issues. Katia emphasizes that her creations come from a personal journey deeply rooted in family legacy and sustainability.
Katia's journey began when her father, Sérgio da Silva Mastroto, a tilapia farmer, inspired her with his wisdom and passion for his work. Following his passing due to leukemia in 2016, Katia was moved by his final words, which led her to explore the potential of tilapia skin as a resource. This tragic loss catalyzed her entrepreneurial spirit, motivating her to develop a brand called UnaPele Couros, which houses her fashion creations and her commitment to environmental responsibility.
The brand not only honors her father's legacy but also aims to create a positive impact on the local community by promoting sustainable practices and reusing by-products that would otherwise contribute to waste. Through her work, Katia hopes to inspire others, demonstrating that passion, creativity, and sustainability can lead to meaningful change within one's community and beyond.
