FCT poll: Wike has right to support any candidate he wants, says APC

The APC endorses Nyesom Wike's right to support candidates from any political party in the forthcoming FCT elections, emphasizing his constitutional freedoms.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has publicly affirmed the rights of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of Rivers State, to support any political candidate of his choice. In a recent interview on Channels Television, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka stated that Wike is a citizen with the freedom guaranteed by the Nigerian constitution, allowing him to campaign for any candidate irrespective of party affiliation.

This statement came in response to rising scrutiny regarding Wike's alignment with APC candidates as the area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory approach on February 21. Despite the implications of his support for the opposition, Morka asserted that Wike's liberty to make political endorsements should not be questioned, reinforcing the principle of individual rights within the political landscape of Nigeria.

The situation reflects the complex dynamics of Nigerian politics, particularly as the APC succeeded in winning five out of six area councils in the previous election cycle. This endorsement of Wike possibly strengthens the party's position while simultaneously raising questions about unity within the opposition, primarily the Peoples Democratic Party, which is facing internal challenges in maintaining a cohesive strategy ahead of the election.
