New member appointed to the Ethics Council
Trude Myklebust has been appointed as a new member of Norway's Ethics Council following the resignation of Cecilie Hellestveit, who left due to concerns over the council's independence.
Trude Myklebust has been appointed as the newest member of Norway's Ethics Council after Cecilie Hellestveit resigned in November. Myklebust previously served on the Council from 2017 to 2022 and is currently an associate professor at Oslo Met, focusing on financial market law and sustainable finance. The appointment was announced by the Ministry of Finance.
Hellestveit resigned after the government decided that the Council would no longer have the authority to recommend excluding companies from investments overseen by Norges Bank. She expressed concerns that this move compromised the Council's independence, thereby reframing its role and responsibilities in ethical investing. Myklebust's reappointment brings her back to a Council that is undergoing significant changes and challenges related to governance and ethical oversight in financial investments.
Alongside Myklebust, the Ethics Council is led by Svein Richard Brandtzæg, with Siv Helen Rygh Torstensen serving as vice-chair, and other members including Egil Matsen and Vigdis Vandvik. The composition of the Council aims to enhance its credibility and effectiveness in addressing the ethical implications of financial markets—a growing concern in light of evolving sustainability standards and market practices in Norway and beyond.
