Hungary promises to veto sanctions against Russia, Kęstutis Budrys states: the EU cannot become Budapest's hostage

Lithuania's Kęstutis Budrys criticizes Hungary's plans to block EU sanctions against Russia, asserting that the EU cannot be held hostage by a single state’s demands.

Kęstutis Budrys, the Lithuanian Minister, expressed strong disapproval of Hungary’s decision to threaten to block EU sanctions against Russia unless Ukraine opens the Druzhba oil pipeline. He remarked that Lithuania and other countries should not become hostages to a single state's demands. This stance was articulated ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, highlighting the ongoing tensions within the EU regarding Russia's aggression and the varying responses of member states.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had announced Hungary's intention to veto sanctions if Ukraine did not resume oil shipments through the critical Druzhba pipeline, which has been impacted by Russian military actions. Budrys clarified that the pipeline is not fully blocked but under repair due to damage inflicted by Russian forces. He emphasized that several Southern European countries have provided Hungary with alternative oil supply options, yet Hungary persists in seeking cheap Russian oil.

This situation underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics within the EU, where divergent energy dependencies and political positions can lead to significant friction. The challenge lies in presenting a unified front against Russia while accommodating the differing priorities of member states, particularly when it comes to energy security and economic interests.
