Childcare worker extradited from Fiji returns to Qld on rape charge
A Fijian childcare worker has been extradited back to Queensland to face rape charges stemming from an incident at a Sunshine Coast childcare center.
Arvind Ajay Singh, a 43-year-old childcare worker from Fiji, has returned to Queensland to face allegations of rape that occurred at a Sunshine Coast childcare center over four years ago. The incident allegedly took place between February 23 and April 27, 2022. Singh appeared in Maroochydore District Court, where he appeared somber and unresponsive as legal proceedings commenced; the Crown prosecution is seeking to modify his bail conditions that originally mandated he report to the Nambour police station once a week.
During the court session, Singh's defense attorney, Matthew Cooper, indicated that they are currently awaiting the new bail draft from the prosecution. Once both parties reach an agreement on the bail conditions, the details will be presented to Judge Glen Cash for approval, allowing Singh the possibility of being released from custody on bail. Singh's legal challenges began after his visa was canceled, resulting in his deportation to Fiji in July 2025, following his arrest in connection with the alleged crime.
This case has drawn public attention due to its serious nature and the circumstances of Singh's extradition. As the legal process unfolds in Queensland, it raises important questions about the handling of such sensitive allegations, the legal intricacies surrounding extradition, and what measures will be taken to ensure the safety of children within childcare environments.
