Major Project in Wetterau: Planning for Substation on 43 Football Fields Paused

The planning for a substation in Wetterau, Germany, is delayed by several years, while the operator continues to seek land for its construction.

The construction of a substation in Wetterau, covering an area of 30 hectares, is now delayed by at least eight years according to a spokesperson from the transmission network operator Tennet. The commissioning of the project was initially expected by 2037, but developmental activities have been halted due to various reasons. Despite the postponement, Tennet is continuing its efforts to acquire necessary land for the project by conducting market evaluations.

Tennet's plans involve site locations between Friedberg-Dorheim and Reichelsheim, an area referred to as having the size comparable to approximately 40 football fields. However, the municipality of Reichelsheim has publicly announced that it will not sell any land for the substation construction. This decision has a significant impact on Tennet’s territories and complicates the acquisition process for land needed for the new infrastructure.

This delay raises concerns regarding the future energy supply and expansion of the electrical grid in the region, especially as the need for reliable energy sources continues to grow. The local government’s decision demonstrates the challenges faced by energy companies in gaining community support for large-scale projects that may have a disruptive nature or concern over land use. The future of the substation project remains uncertain, pending further negotiations with other property owners and stakeholders in the area.
