Plans for Oberwiesenfeld: The Knorr-Bremse site will become a 'Legacy City'
The former Knorr-Bremse site in Oberwiesenfeld is set to transform into a new urban area featuring residential, commercial, and public spaces by 2027.
The former Knorr-Bremse site at Oberwiesenfeld will soon undergo significant redevelopment, transitioning from a cultural space known as 'Lucky Star' to a comprehensive urban neighborhood. This redevelopment, expected to begin in mid-2027, will cover over five hectares and include 620 apartments, offices, retail spaces, child care facilities, a nursing home, and a public park. The city planning committee has unanimously approved the development plan, highlighting its potential to transform the area into a vibrant community.
Local officials have expressed optimism about the project, emphasizing its role in enhancing the urban landscape and providing much-needed housing and services in the vicinity of the Olympiapark. Florian SchΓΆnemann, a member of the Green party, praised the initiative as creating a 'beautiful residential area on a previously sealed surface.' Similarly, Heike Kainz from the CSU remarked on the positive reception of the proposal, indicating a strong consensus among city leaders about the benefits it will bring to the local community.
As the project moves forward, it symbolizes a broader trend in urban redevelopment in Germany, aiming to repurpose industrial sites into multifunctional urban spaces. This shift not only addresses residential needs but also promotes community engagement, with the introduction of parks and communal facilities, thus contributing to the overall quality of life in Munich. The conversion of these spaces reflects a growing interest in sustainable urban planning and enhancing urban biodiversity, thereby setting a precedent for future developments in the region.
