16 years after the decision – Piteå residents also want central alignment
A recent local referendum in Piteå showed a strong preference for a central alignment of the Norrbotniabanan railway.
In a local referendum regarding the Norrbotniabanan railway project, Piteå residents overwhelmingly favored a central alignment option. Out of 33,944 eligible voters, 11,725 participated, showcasing a voter turnout of 34.5%. The central alignment, suggested by Trafikverket back in 2010, garnered 64.7% of the votes, significantly outpacing the alternative route along E4 through Storfors, which received only 34.3%. This decisive outcome reflects the community's desire for more accessible infrastructure and improved connectivity within the town.
The referendum, costing the municipality approximately two million kronor, is a landmark decision as it reshapes the future of transportation in Piteå. Many residents expressed their approval, highlighting the importance of having a railway that travels through the town center, thus enhancing local commerce and improving public access to transportation. This feedback from the voter base indicates a collective commitment to prioritizing community needs over alternative infrastructural proposals.
The results from this referendum will likely influence how financial resources are allocated moving forward, as the municipal leadership must now align with public sentiment and official recommendations. By adhering to the choice made by voters, local authorities can ensure that the transportation network adapts to the aspirations of Piteå residents, fostering further development and integration within the Norrbotten region.
