Ethiopia: Ethiopia Ev Adoption Gains Pace After Gas Car Import Ban

Ethiopia's ban on gasoline and diesel car imports is accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in the country.

Ethiopia is witnessing a significant shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) as a result of the government's recent ban on importing gasoline and diesel cars. This progressive policy, established in 2024, aims to reshape the country's automotive market, which is one of the smallest in Africa. By cutting tariffs on electric vehicles to as low as 0% for fully knocked-down kits, the government has made EVs more accessible and economically viable for consumers. The adoption rate of EVs in Ethiopia has skyrocketed from under 1% to nearly 6% in just two years, driven largely by fiscal pressures related to the high costs of fuel imports and the country's recent struggles with debt and an IMF bailout.
