Electric vehicles (EVs) have traditionally been seen as expensive and not readily adoptable in Africa, with predictions suggesting that they wouldn't replace petrol and diesel vehicles until after 2040. However, a recent study highlights how dropping battery prices, increased global production of EVs, and abundant solar energy have shifted this outlook. The research suggests that in several African nations, EVs paired with off-grid solar charging may soon be cheaper than their petrol-powered counterparts.

Despite this promising trend, significant barriers remain that hinder the adoption of electric vehicles in Africa. A critical challenge identified by researchers is the lack of financing options for consumers wishing to purchase EVs. The necessity for tailored financial solutions and investment in infrastructure are seen as essential steps that governments and private sectors must focus on in order to unlock the potential of electric mobility across the continent.

The study, conducted by researchers from ETH Zürich and the Paul Scherrer Institute in collaboration with African universities, emphasizes the potential for African nations to leapfrog traditional fossil fuel technology in favor of cleaner electric options. By providing evidence rooted in the unique socio-economic context of Africa, these findings aim to assist policymakers and stakeholders in promoting a sustainable transition towards electric mobility, which could result in significant environmental and economic benefits for the region.
