They thought taking vitamins 'just in case' couldn't hurt. Experts, however, have a different opinion

Experts warn that while many Czechs take dietary supplements without clear need, excessive intake can lead to negative health effects.

Czechs are increasingly health-conscious, with over 60% claiming to actively take care of their health. However, many individuals tend to resort to dietary supplements without a concrete justification, leading to concerns among health professionals. According to pharmacist Pavla Horáková, vitamins such as D, iron, zinc, and selenium can lead to imbalances and unwanted side effects when consumed in excess, emphasizing that supplementation should only be considered when a deficiency is known.

The beginning of the year typically signifies a time for resolutions and a health 'restart'. Horáková asserts that effective prevention doesn't rely solely on a basket full of vitamins, but rather starts with fundamental lifestyle choices including sleep, physical activity, diet, and stress management. While supplements can help, they should not replace these essential foundations of health.

A representative study, 'Health Under Microscope', reveals that while over 60% of Czechs actively care for their health, there are gaps in health literacy and the ability to select appropriate supplements. Many consume these products 'just in case' – often during periods of fatigue or stress – which can lead to unnecessary, excessive consumption without addressing underlying health needs.
