Being hunted at home, thousands of rupees taken without order

A new scam utilizes Cash on Delivery services to trick victims into paying for unordered parcels delivered to their homes or workplaces.

Cyber criminals have devised a unique method of scamming individuals by exploiting the Cash on Delivery (COD) service, which has now been termed the COD Scam. In this scheme, unsuspecting victims receive parcels at their home or office addresses that contain useless items, with the intention of deceiving them into believing that these parcels have been ordered by friends or family members. The scam preys on the innocence of individuals, making it easy for cybercriminals to ensnare their victims.

Once the victim is informed that a package is waiting for them under the name of a friend, relative, or colleague, they naturally assume it was an order placed by someone they know. Consequently, they proceed to make a payment, either in cash or via online methods. However, the genuine deception unfolds when, after the payment is made, it becomes clear that the parcel is fake and worthless, and by then, the delivery person is already long gone, leaving the victim with a financial loss.

The ramifications of the COD Scam are significant, with the total amount scammed being in the thousands rather than just millions. Victims often feel embarrassed for having fallen for such a common trick, and the mention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's warning against digital fraud only emphasizes the increasing need for awareness and caution among the public. As this scam evolves, it is imperative for individuals to stay vigilant and informed about such fraudulent activities, which represent a growing threat in the digital age.
