Suwon City, 'Emergency Vehicle' Priority Signal System... Automatic Green Light at Intersections
Suwon City has announced the expansion of an 'emergency vehicle priority signal system' to ensure that all emergency vehicles can receive green signals automatically at intersections.
Suwon City, located in South Korea's Gyeonggi Province, has recently expanded its 'emergency vehicle priority signal system' to cover all emergency vehicles within the region. Initially developed in March 2020 as a pioneering initiative nationwide, this system utilizes GPS technology to track the location of emergency vehicles in real-time. When these vehicles approach an intersection, the system automatically triggers a green signal, significantly improving response times. Reports indicate that since its implementation, the average dispatch time for emergency services has decreased by 63.5%, allowing them to reach comprehensive hospital emergency rooms within 10 minutes and enhancing the potential for patient survival during critical moments.
Moreover, the integration of this system has notably reduced traffic accidents involving emergency vehicles from an average of 14 incidents per year to none. This has increased the safety of paramedics and reduced risks associated with running red lights at intersections. Following the success of the program, the city has completed the installation of signal devices in all emergency vehicles, including those at Suwon Fire Station and Suwon South Fire Station. A city official expressed optimism that this expanded coverage will not only improve response times within Suwon but also extend to suburban areas, enhancing overall emergency response efficiency. The official urged the public to practice yielding behavior when emergency vehicles are in motion, ensuring safer passages for these critical services that serve the community during emergencies.
