New in Finland – Traffic Light Recognizes Car
Finland is implementing an innovative traffic light system that recognizes emergency vehicles and grants them priority passage at intersections.
In Finland, an exciting technological development is taking place with the introduction of a traffic light system that can identify emergency vehicles. When sirens sound and blue lights flash as an emergency vehicle approaches, the traffic light unexpectedly turns green, allowing the vehicle to pass without delay. This is not a magic trick but rather a sophisticated technology developed by Fintraffic, the national traffic management company, which aims to improve response times for ambulances and fire trucks.
Currently in the pilot phase, this system has been tested at about 700 intersections with the involvement of 300 emergency vehicles. Notably, there have been no accidents related to emergency vehicles during this pilot, demonstrating the practical effectiveness of the system. Juho Neuvonen, the product manager at Fintraffic, highlights the crucial importance of saving every moment, especially in congested areas where the timely arrival of emergency services can make a significant difference.
The initiative aims to provide a nationwide synchronized traffic signal priority service that ensures emergency vehicles can navigate intersections smoothly in what is being referred to as a "green wave." This service is set to enhance the efficiency of emergency responses across the country, contributing to better public safety and potentially saving lives by allowing quicker access to critical situations.
